Vista SP2 has changed the Vsp1cln.exe tool to Compcln.exe, which was integrated into SP1, but it is no longer a part of the SP2.  However, the basic functionality has been successfully preserved.

SP2 also includes a Service Pack Clean-up tool (Compcln.exe), which helps restore the hard disk space by permanently deleting the previous versions of the files (RTM and SP1) that are being serviced by SP2.

How to-

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator (when UAC is enabled) and click on Continue to jump ahead.
  2. Execute the command Compcln.exe
  3. It prompts to make SP2 permanent on your computer. Press “Y” to confirm!

 Compcln.exe

Have a happy Windows computing.

December 9th, 2008

You have read how to install Windows after installing Windows Vista, In the article you learnt how we can add Windows XP (ntldr based OS entry in BCD) and today here are few simple commands that help to insert Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7 boot entry in BCD.

It helps to fix bootloader problems when we lost BCD based bootloader. So here we go…
How to:

  1. First of all, boot from Windows Vista/7/Server 2008 DVD and choose regional settings according to your region.
  2. Click on Repair your Computer. It scans and detects Windows Vista/7/Server 2008 based OSs in existing partitions, once it detects it’ll autmatically restore BCD bootloader and add Windows OS entry in BCD.

Above solution get rid of the problem, when your system unable to boot in any OS.

Now if we lost or missing any Windows Vista/7/Server 2008 entry in BCD, there few commands help you to add them.

    1. Boot into Windows OS let it be Windows Vista or earlier version of Windows.
    2. Open Command Prompt (In Vista, Run as Administrator) and navigate to the drive that contains the dead Windows OS files. lets take an example E: is the drive.
    3. Now execute the commands one by one and follow output The operation completed successfully.
    4. bcdedit /create /d “Windows Vista” /application osloader

It generates a ID that is GUID, a 16-byte (128-bit) number. Write down the ID.
As we know these all OS’s major verion is 6, so we just need to differ the description only like Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and Microsoft Windows 7

      bcdedit /set {XXXXXXXX-YYYY-ZZZZ-AAAA-BBBBBBBBBBBB} device partition=C:
      bcdedit /set {XXXXXXXX-YYYY-ZZZZ-AAAA-BBBBBBBBBBBB} osdevice partition=E:

      bcdedit /set {XXXXXXXX-YYYY-ZZZZ-AAAA-BBBBBBBBBBBB} path \Windows\system32\winload.exe

      bcdedit /set {XXXXXXXX-YYYY-ZZZZ-AAAA-BBBBBBBBBBBB} systemroot \Windows

      bcdedit /displayeroder {XXXXXXXX-YYYY-ZZZZ-AAAA-BBBBBBBBBBBB} /addlast

The command adds the specified OS entry to the end of the boot manager display order
      Optional commands

      bcdedit /set {XXXXXXXX-YYYY-ZZZZ-AAAA-BBBBBBBBBBBB} nx OptIn

    Microsoft offers Hyper-V for free

    September 10th, 2008

Microsoft began a major virtualisation push late yesterday, with the introduction of new virtualisation tools and by making its core hypervisor product free of charge.

The new Hyper-V Server 2008 would be available via the web at no charge, Microsoft said in a statement. The download, which will go live in 30 days, supports virtual machines running Windows or Linux.

The software comprises Hyper-V itself, plus a cut-down Server Core installation of Microsoft’s Windows Server 2008, and as such is a stand-alone version of the virtualisation solution.

Microsoft had previously said it would charge US$28 for the standalone Hyper-V product. As expected, Microsoft announced its new System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SVCMM) 2008, which will also be released within 30 days.

The software allows companies to centrally manage their virtual infrastructure, whether their virtual networks run on Microsoft’s Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V, Server 2008 Hyper-V or Virtual Server 2005 R2; or on VMware Virtual Infrastructure 3.

Also yesterday, Microsoft said it had demonstrated that for the first time it could run live migration in a virtualised environment.

Usually when a system is migrated from one system to another (physical or virtual), the system in use must shut down before it can restate in its new location or in its new environment. With live migration, no shutdown should be required.

Live migration was not available just yet, explained Neil Sanderson, head of virtualisation at Microsoft UK. “For now we have quick migration [standard migration involving a stop and then a restart], but live migration should be available in 30 days,” he said.

The changes to Microsoft’s virtualisation strategy are part of a series of shifts. Microsoft came under a lot of pressure recently to make its virtualisation strategy more flexible. Previously the company had imposed financial penalties on companies that had virtualisation strategies and wanted to be able to shift between different virtual operating systems.

In August, the company relaxed the restrictions, saying organizations were no longer restricted to move from one operating system to another only once in a 90-day period.

Monday’s announcement is a further relaxation of those rules.

How to enable or disable Autorun (Autoplay) function for specifice devices in Windows

    September 4th, 2008

The main reason of Autorun is to offer an app response to hardware actions that start on a computer. Autorun (Autoplay) feature is typically called from removable media like CD/DVDs and USB drives. During AutoPlay, the Autorun.inf file from the media is parsed. This file specifies which commands the system runs. Most of CD/DVD’s Installers and other removable devices use this functionality to start setup.

So here is an article that helps you enable or disable autorun functionality for specific devices.

    How to-

1.) Open Registry Editor (Type regedit in Start Search or Run Dialog Box and press ENTER)
    2.) Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
    CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\

3.) Now look for NoDriveTypeAutoRun, a DWORD registry value and set its value as you desired to control autorun (autoplay) function for specific devices.

    HEX     Decimal   Action
1 1 Disables AutoPlay on drives of unknown type
4 4 Disables AutoPlay on removable drives
8 8 Disables AutoPlay on fixed drives
10 16 Disables AutoPlay on network drives
    20 32 Disables AutoPlay on CD-ROM drives
40 64 Disables AutoPlay on RAM disks
80 128 Disables AutoPlay on drives of unknown type
FF 255 Disables AutoPlay on all kinds of drives

You can disable multiple devices by adding their values, like if you wanna disable CD-ROMs and Removable devices only.

Just add 4+32 = 36 (In Decimal) and 4+20=24 (In Hex) and set the resultant value.
